With high temperatures, the competition in the weekend\u2019s events is also at a high at the <strong>four skyrunning events<\/strong> hosted in <strong>Alagna Valsesia, Piedmont, Italy<\/strong> on <strong>June 14 <\/strong>and<strong> 15, 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Europe\u2019s highest race<\/strong> kicked off this morning with the<strong> seventh edition<\/strong> of the <strong>Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong> and this year\u2019s new<strong> SkySummit<\/strong> <em>\u2014<\/em> both reaching <strong>4,554m altitude<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>35 km loop <\/strong>with a total<strong> 7,000m vertical climb<\/strong> to the Monte Rosa summit and back closed with race favourites, <strong>Italian William Boffelli<\/strong> and teammate <strong>Roberto De Lorenzi <\/strong>from<strong> Switzerland <\/strong>taking the win in <strong>4h38\u201909\u201d <\/strong>over a slightly longer course. It is Boffelli\u2019s <strong>sixth win<\/strong> here with different partners. (He set the <strong>standing race record in 2023 <\/strong>with partner<strong> Tadei Pivk <\/strong>in <strong>4h29\u201920\u2019<\/strong>\u2019).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5666\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5666\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5666 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/3pmstaging.it\/monterosa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/AMA-2025_VK2_PH-STEFANO-JEANTET-17-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1290\" height=\"860\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5666\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Super-stars William Boffelli and Roberto Delorenzi on their way to Boffelli\u2019s sixth win. \u00a9Stefano Jeantet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>\u201cWinning this race six times? It all comes down to love \u2014 love for the mountains and for this sport. The Monte Rosa SkyMarathon is THE race. There\u2019s nothing more beautiful than this, and it\u2019s an event you simply can\u2019t miss. This year too, I gave it my all but will be back with Roberto to try again for the record next year \u2014 hopefully with better conditions!\u201d<\/em> commented Boffelli.<\/p>\n<p>Delorenzi, at his second attempt here, added, \u201c<em>A spectacular race! We really hoped we could break the record, and getting so close despite a slight detour made us realise it\u2019s definitely possible. I also struggled a bit in the lower section, still feeling the effects of a recent cold, so I want to come back on top form and give it a proper go!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5670\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5670\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5670 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/3pmstaging.it\/monterosa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/AMA-2025_VK2_PH-STEFANO-JEANTET-38-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1290\" height=\"860\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5670\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Luka Kovacic from Slovenia enjoying \u201cthe best race\u201d he\u2019s ever done. \u00a9Stefano Jeantet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The second men\u2019s team was <strong>all-Italian<\/strong> with locals <strong>Mattia Bertoncini<\/strong> and<strong> Davide Cheraz<\/strong>, closing in <strong>4h51\u201941\u201d<\/strong>. <strong>Third<\/strong> were <strong>Slovenians Luka Kovacic<\/strong> and<strong> Klemen \u0160panring<\/strong> at their first attempt in <strong>5h07\u201935\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Wow. Simply wow! This is the best race I\u2019ve ever done. From the town to the top of the mountain and back. So simple, yet so incredible. It was an amazing experience although we struggled a little in the highest part as we don\u2019t have such high mountains in Slovenia. However, we\u2019ll come back for sure now that we know what to expect!\u201d<\/em> commented Kovacic.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s race,<strong> Italians<\/strong> <strong>Ilaria Veronese<\/strong> and <strong>Mara Martini<\/strong> were the first to reach the summit in <strong>4h11\u201911\u201d<\/strong> but were overtaken on the downhill by <strong>Swedish twins Sanna <\/strong>and<strong> Lina Elkott<\/strong> who closed in <strong>6h17\u201903\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5676\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5676\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5676 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/3pmstaging.it\/monterosa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DY6_8867_BD_IPTC-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1290\" height=\"860\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5676\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Celebrating their second win, Swedish twins Lina and Sanna Elkott are in love with Monte Rosa. \u00a9DamianoBenedettoPhoto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Winners of the <strong>2021 Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong>, they proved their incredible strength yet again despite lack of acclimatisation, arriving <strong>14<sup>th<\/sup> overall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>We came here simply hoping to make the best of such an incredible place. We didn\u2019t expect to perform so well, but our training on snow at home really paid off! The crowd also is incredible. We felt welcome the first time, now we\u2019re almost at home!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt was hard. The snow in the lower parts was knee-deep! The downhill was tough, but really fast! We came down on our butts \u2013 in true skyrunning style!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The new <strong>SkySummit<\/strong> race embodies the up-only vertical concept, typical of skyrunning \u2013 <strong>17.5 km <\/strong>with<strong> 3,500m<\/strong> <strong>climb<\/strong>, athletes running in pairs, roped together for safety.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5668\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5668\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5668 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/3pmstaging.it\/monterosa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/AMA-2025_VK2_PH-STEFANO-JEANTET-35-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1290\" height=\"860\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5668\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marcello Ugazio, no stranger to Verticals, triumphed in the first-ever SkySummit with his partner Alex Rigo. \u00a9Stefano Jeantet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Italian Marcello Ugazio<\/strong>, winner of the <strong>2023 AMA VK2<\/strong> and<strong> 2022<\/strong> <strong>World Championships silver medallist<\/strong>, proved his uphill prowess on this new vertical, high altitude test, conquering <strong>first place<\/strong> with his partner <strong>Alex Rigo <\/strong>in <strong>3h22\u201907\u201d<\/strong>. Ugazio stated, \u201c<em>I really loved this new race. It\u2019s not the usual all-out effort of a Vertical, but a proper long race where you really have to push hard. As soon as we passed 4,000 metres, Alex seemed like a different person and had an incredible pace, so we were able to speed up. There\u2019s still room for improvement, so I\u2019ll definitely be back!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Second and third were all-Italian teams, while the women\u2019s race saw <strong>Italians<\/strong> <strong>Marina Cugnetto <\/strong>and<strong> Camilla Calosso<\/strong> summit in <strong>4h20\u201933\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5674\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5674\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5674 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/3pmstaging.it\/monterosa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/AMA-2025_VK2_PH-STEFANO-JEANTET-76-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1290\" height=\"860\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marcela Vasinova, second in the SkySummit with her partner Katrin Bieler, enjoyed an incredible race. \u00a9Stefano Jeantet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Second were <strong>Marcela Vasinova<\/strong> from <strong>Czechia<\/strong> and <strong>Italian Katrin Bieler<\/strong> in <strong>4h24\u201928\u201d<\/strong>. \u201c<em>It was an incredibly beautiful race today<\/em>,\u201d said Vasinova. \u201c<em>The uphill racing was perfect. We had a lot of competition from the first team, we were trying to chase them all the time. We didn\u2019t win but there\u2019s no position to pay for such an incredible day in these mountains<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interesting to note the first race to the summit and back was the <strong>Fila Skyrunner\u00ae Trophy<\/strong> in <strong>1993, <\/strong>won by<strong> Italian Ettore Champretavy <\/strong>in <strong>4h59\u201950\u201d <\/strong>with an estimated<strong> 3h25\u2019 <\/strong>ascent time. Today, <strong>32 years later<\/strong>, he competed in the <strong>SkySummit<\/strong> with his son<strong> Fabien<\/strong> closing <strong>tenth <\/strong>in <strong>4h23\u201948<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A massive number of fans \u2013 <strong>precisely 1,300<\/strong> \u2013 cheered on the<strong> 542 participants<\/strong> on the higher stretches of the course where the <strong>Monterosa 2000<\/strong> lifts from both sides of the mountain, Alagna and Gressoney, reach <strong>3,275m altitude<\/strong>. Adding to the atmosphere, a lot of support came from huge cowbells rung by herders.
