With a day\u2019s postponement due to bad weather, today\u2019s <\/span>Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong> – <\/span>Europe\u2019s highest race<\/strong> \u2013 paid off with blue skies, but knee-deep snow…cold and wind in <\/span>Alagna Valsesia<\/strong>, <\/span>Piedmont, Italy<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

As usual, the athletes raced in pairs of two, roped together for safety over the snowline where 174 teams<\/strong> from across the world took part in the 35 km long <\/strong>race with a massive 7,000m vertical climb<\/strong>. However, conditions were not the best for new records although Italians William Boffelli<\/strong> and Tadei Pivk<\/strong> who set the ascent and round-trip records last year, took the win again, crushing the competition. The women\u2019s winners were also Italian<\/strong>, Martina Valmassoi<\/strong> and Giuditta Turini<\/strong>, who placed an incredible eighth overall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>We felt great and really enjoyed the race,\u201d <\/em>commented Boffelli. \u201c<\/span>The snow conditions were perfect on the lower part, but as soon as we passed the couloir, we understood we couldn\u2019t push as the snow was too soft. When it became clear we couldn\u2019t get the record, we just ran to enjoy this perfect day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI have to admit William was too strong today\u201d <\/em>Pivk confessed. \u201cI had a hard time keeping his pace after the couloir. He was pushing and I was following all the time. That\u2019s maybe the reason I didn\u2019t feel the cold or wind – too tired!\u201d <\/em>\u00a0The duo closed in 4h41\u201923\u201d<\/strong>, twelve minutes over last year\u2019s record time and 29 minutes ahead<\/strong> of the second team, Italians Daniel Antonioli<\/strong> and Lorenzo Rota Martir<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis race is always amazing,\u201d <\/em>said Antonioli. \u201cI thought we were in for a good battle with Tadei and William, but they were too strong today. We just kept our pace, knowing we couldn\u2019t win, but I\u2019m sure Lorenzo will be a contender for the victory soon!\u201d<\/em> Taking up Antonioli\u2019s prediction, Rota Martir commented, \u201cToday I never felt 100%, so I want to come back and give it my everything and see what can happen when I\u2019m feeling OK!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Third was the Italo\/Swiss team<\/strong> comprising Edoardo Albrighi <\/strong>and Roberto Delorenzi<\/strong>. Delorenzi, Skyrunning World Champion<\/strong> and Skyrunner\u00ae World Series<\/strong> ranking leader<\/strong>, was fresh from his win the previous day in the AMA VK2 <\/strong>double Vertical Kilometer\u00ae but had enough power in his legs to push and clinch the podium from a 12th<\/sup> position at the half-way point, fourth at the summit and third at the finish line.<\/p>\n

In the women\u2019s race everything was clear from the start. Italians Martina Valmassoi<\/strong> and Giuditta Turini<\/strong> had an eight-minute margin halfway up the course over American<\/strong> Hillary Gerardi<\/strong> and Italian Marina Cugnetto<\/strong>, and last-minute entries, Dimitra Theocharis<\/strong> and Iris Pessey<\/strong> who battled until Colle del Lys at 4,200m altitude, where Gerardi-Cugnetto were able to push and distance the Greek-French duo.<\/p>\n

\u201cI won here in 2018 with Holly Page,\u201d <\/em>said Gerardi. \u201cI always love to come back because it\u2019s a great race, it\u2019s exactly what I love and what I do in my free time, that is, start at the base in the valley and go up the mountain and back \u2013 pure skyrunning.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things that I love is that you can really tell that it\u2019s something that\u2019s appreciated by the locals. When we were up on the glacier there were literally thousands of people up there, spectators, alpinists, skiers \u2013 everyone was warm, encouraging and cheering.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a great experience to run with Marina [Cugnetto] who had a hard time at the beginning of the race but she\u2019s tough as nails and I think she actually felt better the higher we got. It was so cool to share it with her as a partner of the SCARPA team. When we think about the brand and its values and being main sponsor here, it all fits perfectly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The concomitant Monte Rosa Vertical<\/strong>, 5 km long <\/strong>with 1,150m vertical climb<\/strong> wasn\u2019t short of excitement, with Italian Andrea Rostan<\/strong> and New Zealander Sophie Grant<\/strong> conquering the victory. Rostan set the new race record in 46\u201951\u201d<\/strong>, slicing 9\u2019 off the previous one.<\/p>\n

Summing up the weekend\u2019s events, 544 athletes<\/strong> from 27 countries<\/strong> across five continents <\/strong>took part, underlining the ever-increasing popularity of this event \u2013 the birthplace of skyrunning and Europe\u2019s highest race.<\/p>\n
