After the fastest ascent record, four-time winner William Boffelli, with team mate Tadei Pivk race towards the men’s record. \u00a9josemiguelmunoze<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

It was a perfect day in the mountains for the iconic Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong> in Alagna Valsesia<\/strong>, Italy<\/strong>, on June 17<\/strong>, which saw the men\u2019s record fall with an incredible performance by Italians William Boffelli<\/strong> and Tadei Pivk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After last year\u2019s difficult conditions, sunny weather prevailed with blue sky and plenty of snow on the upper stretches of the course which reaches Europe\u2019s highest refuge<\/strong> at 4,554m altitude<\/strong> where the temperature was a cool -11\u00b0C. The concomitant race, the AMA<\/strong> VK2<\/strong>, a double Vertical Kilometer\u00ae to 3,200m<\/strong> altitude was on snow for the last 700m<\/strong> of the ascent. Athletes from 28 countries<\/strong> took place in the events.<\/p>\n

Racing in teams of two for safety, 334 athletes<\/strong> surged from the village square at dawn to head up the classic course to the summit of Monte Rosa and back for 35 km<\/strong> with a massive 7,000m vertical climb <\/strong>between ascent and descent.<\/p>\n

William Boffelli is the first man to have won this legendary race four times<\/strong> with different partners. His team mate today was last year\u2019s winner<\/strong>, Tadei Pivk. Together they broke the men\u2019s team record<\/strong> to close in 4h29\u201920\u201d<\/strong>, ten minutes off the previous record set in 2018 by Boffelli together with Franco Coll\u00e9<\/strong>. The men\u2019s individual record of 4h24\u2019<\/strong> set in 1994 by Fabio Meraldi<\/strong> is still standing.<\/p>\n

The winning men\u2019s team also set the all-time fastest ascent <\/strong>to the summit <\/strong>in 3h06\u2019 <\/strong>for which they will be awarded the Skyrunning 4000 Trophy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On his poker of victories Boffelli commented,\u201cI must say thanks the various partners I had overs the years as more than half the merit is theirs. I must also thank Franco Coll\u00e9 who was supposed to run with Tadei, but wasn\u2019t in shape and who paired us. Today Tadei was very strong and kept pushing on the downhill to try to break the record. Meraldi\u2019s still stands, but we beat the previous one!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThis race is really special for me – a unique experience today with tons of supporters on the course who cheered us along the way. I almost felt like Moses!\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n

Tadei Pivk added, \u201cI wanted to come back to this amazing race and teaming up with William was simply perfect. We kept pushing each other in key moments and this is what I love about this formula – racing in pairs gives you more strength than running alone.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Frenchman Aur\u00e9lien Dunand-Pallaz, despite dislocating his shoulder, took second place with Italian Daniel Antonioli. \u00a9josemiguelmunoze<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Second was the French-Italian duo Aur\u00e9lien Dunand-Pallaz<\/strong> and Daniel Antonioli<\/strong>. They battled with Boffelli-Pivk for most of the climb with only five minutes separating them at the summit. The gap increased on the downhill after Dunand-Pallaz dislocated his shoulder while sliding on the snow. Luckily, Brazilian <\/strong>athlete Rafael Aquino Leal<\/strong>, a surgeon, intervened and, with a professional touch, put his should back in place allowing them o cross the finish line in 4h36\u201926\u201d<\/strong>, also under the previous record.<\/p>\n

The first foreign team in the men\u2019s category was from the UK with Kim Collison<\/strong> and Josh Wade<\/strong> in 5h33\u2019<\/strong> taking sixth place. \u201cAbsolutely stunning<\/em>!\u201d was their comment. \u201cWe\u2019ll be back next year with more Brits!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

The women\u2019s race went to Italians Elisabetta Negra<\/strong> and Giulia Zanovello<\/strong>, who crossed the finish line in 6\u201942\u201933\u201d<\/strong>, stunned. Their last attempt was over eight hours. \u201cThis year I felt much better than in the past. I trained more and harder and it showed, but the biggest boost was the excitement for my recent wedding<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

Germans<\/strong> Anna Michel<\/strong> and Tanja L\u00f6wenhagen<\/strong> took second in 6h56\u201916\u201d<\/strong>, while Spaniards Nuria Dom\u00ednguez<\/strong> and Yolanda Fern\u00e1ndez Del Campo<\/strong>\u00a0took third.<\/p>\n

Predictions were right for the AMA VK2<\/strong> where Italian Marcello Ugazio, Skyrunning World Championships silver medallist<\/strong>, proved once more to be the fastest man on the 9 km<\/strong> uphill only course with 2,000m vertical climb<\/strong>. He beat French<\/strong> runner Julien Michelon<\/strong> by more than three minutes. Third man<\/strong> to reach the 3,200m summit was Italian Mattia Bertoncini<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The women\u2019s race saw Italian Corinna Ghirardi<\/strong> finally take the win after two past second places. Race favourite from France<\/strong>, Iris Pessey<\/strong>, had to settle for second today, not in her best shape. \u201cI\u2019m really happy for this unexpected first place. I pushed really hard below the snowline and kept wondering when Iris would catch me, but I arrived at Indren without seeing her. I was first!<\/em>\u201d Ghirardi commented.<\/p>\n

Third woman was local runner Sabrina Bendotti<\/strong>. With skyrunning in her DNA, she is the niece of Gisella Bendotti<\/strong>, standing record holder of the Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
