It was exactly thirty years<\/strong> ago that the first Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong> took place to the summit of the mountain, launching the sport of skyrunning. Today, Europe\u2019s highest race<\/strong> celebrated the fourth edition<\/strong> after the relaunch in 2018. The legend continues.<\/p>\n

Competing in teams of two, 298 athletes<\/strong> from 23 countries<\/strong> started at dawn to face the challenging 36 km <\/strong>to an altitude<\/strong> of 4,554m<\/strong> with a jaw-dropping 7,000m<\/strong> of vertical ascent and descent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The winning team from Italy<\/strong>, Franco Coll\u00e9<\/strong> and Tadei Pivk <\/strong>who placed second last year, closed with an incredible performance in 5h11\u201935\u201d<\/strong>. Coll\u00e9 set the record with William Boffelli <\/strong>here in\u00a02018\u00a0in\u00a04h39\u201959\u201d<\/strong> over the original course. Due to climate conditions over the last few months, the snow level was seriously diminished and the course had to be redesigned to avoid the steep couloir at 3,200m which proved to be too dangerous for the event, amounting to an increase of one kilometre distance.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a great adventure and it was great to share it with a friend, rather than just a team mate,\u201d <\/em>said Coll\u00e9. \u201cLast year we came just for the fun, but this time Tadei was on top form. After fighting to overtake leaders Antionioli and Bonaldi at the summit, Tadei convinced me to push on the descent. We knew we were strong on the downhill and we decided to give it our all.\u201d<\/em> While an emotional Pivk stated, \u201cI have to thank Franco for convincing me to do this race. He\u2019s been with me on many difficult occasions and after several years off running, he convinced me to return. We were aiming for a top-five place and winning is incredible and very special.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The women\u2019s win was a welcome surprise with a mixed team with Austrian<\/strong> Stephanie Kr\u00f6ll<\/strong>, representing race sponsor SCARPA<\/strong>, and Karina Carsolio <\/strong>from Mexico<\/strong>, who closed in 6h43\u201931<\/strong>\u201d- despite Carsolio suffering an injury on the downhill. \u201cThis is an amazing race \u2013 a real<\/em> skyrunning race! It was incredible being up there and it was great to share this with Stephanie. Each one of us had our moments and we pushed each other in the hard parts. We kept talking to encourage each other,\u201d <\/em>she commented.<\/p>\n

American Hillary Gerardi<\/strong> who won the first edition of the relaunch in 2018 and the AMA VK2<\/strong> in 2021, was back with a second place with French<\/strong> partner C\u00e9lia Chiron<\/strong>. She had this to say: \u201cWhew! This was a tough one! It was so difficult to be on the podium today. After starting well, at one point in the downhill we were in fourth. That\u2019s when C\u00e9lia looked at me and told me to push. And we did! Congratulations to Stephanie and Karina for an amazing race and congratulations to the whole organization: despite the difficult situation we felt really safe on the glacier.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

World-class athlete, Stian Angermund <\/strong>from Norway<\/strong>, took on \u201cthe legend\u201d for the first time accompanied by his partner and mother of their daughter, Katrine<\/strong> Villumsen<\/strong> from Denmark<\/strong>. Despite not being in perfect shape, she led the couple to close before the 9h45\u2019 cut-off time<\/strong>. (Mixed couples are classified in the men\u2019s category).<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/strong>This is the most alpine race I ever did. This is pure skyrunning!\u201d <\/em>said Angermund. \u201cI followed Katrine never pushing her and I\u2019m so happy she did it all on her own without any training – and we were able to close six minutes below the cut-off time! I had never been over 3,000m altitude and wasn\u2019t really prepared for the breathtaking views – maybe also because of the altitude! I will definitely be back again to this wonderful race!\u201d <\/em>he concluded.<\/p>\n

Concomitant with the race to the summit was the AMA VK2<\/strong> – 9 km <\/strong>of pure uphill <\/strong>with 2,086m vertical climb<\/strong>, this perfect double Vertical Kilometer\u00ae<\/strong> tops out at 3,200m altitude<\/strong> where 116 athletes <\/strong>took on the challenge. The winners were Marcello Ugazio<\/strong> from Italy in 1h35\u201956\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>and No\u00e9mie Grandjean <\/strong>from France\u00a0<\/strong> in 2h08’24\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong>, Europe\u2019s highest race<\/strong> to the Margherita hut at 4,554m<\/strong> is a unique event that takes place annually over scree<\/strong>, snowfields<\/strong>, glacier<\/strong> and crevasses<\/strong>. The course touches on the territories of Gressoney La Trinit\u00e9<\/strong> in the Aosta Valley and Switzerland <\/strong>on the upper reaches.<\/p>\n
