Today, nothing stopped the Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong>, Europe\u2019s highest race<\/strong>, from continuing the legend which began back in 1992 with the race that launched skyrunning in the small village of Alagna Valsesia<\/strong> on the Italian side of the mountain.<\/p>\n

558 athletes <\/strong>from 36 countries<\/strong> took part in the third edition after the 2018 relaunch, a slightly reduced number due to Covid restrictions.<\/p>\n

A \u2018mere\u2019 35 kilometres<\/strong> long, the severity of the race is measured with a gruelling 7,000m vertical climb<\/strong> to the Margherita Hut<\/strong> at 4,554m altitude <\/strong>marking the turn-around point. Adding to this unique skyrunning recipe is the challenging terrain over moraine, snow fields and glaciers. The second edition of the AMA VK2<\/strong>, a double Vertical Kilometer\u00ae<\/strong>, was concomitant, covering half the course of the main race \u2013 uphill only.<\/p>\n

One man, Italian William Boffelli<\/strong>, won the race for the third time, each time with a different partner. Today, he paired with Nadir Maguet<\/strong>, winner of the AMA VK2 <\/strong>in 2019. The partnership paid off, crossing the finish line first in a strong 4h43\u201958\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Boffelli commented, \u201cI said \u2018third time lucky\u2019 before the race and I did it! Certainly, my most unexpected win, not because of my partner, but because I\u2019m recovering from a small injury. However, I couldn\u2019t miss out on taking part in the Monte Rosa SkyMarathon again!\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe did a great race, right from the start,\u201d <\/em>commented Maguet. \u201cWe always pushed hard and after winning the AMA VK2 two years ago, I finally ran the full course. The snow conditions weren\u2019t ideal, but we managed a great time anyway!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Second men\u2019s team<\/strong> at the finish were Italians Franco Coll\u00e9<\/strong> and Tadei Pivk<\/strong> in 5h01’28\u201d<\/strong>. Coll\u00e9 set the record with Boffelli here in 2018<\/strong> in 4h39’59”<\/strong> and Pivk, a skyrunning champion, after many years away from racing, proved his prowess yet again. Third<\/strong> to close the men\u2019s podium were Henri Grosjacques<\/strong> and Daniel Thedy<\/strong> in 5h13’07<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

After a week of severe heat and zero temperatures even at 4,300m altitude, the snow was soft underfoot, adding to the challenge. To ensure the safety of the runners, apart from mountain guides, the alpine rescue service and expert volunteers, the runners must run in pairs, roped together, wearing micro crampons.<\/p>\n

An incident did occur due to a crevasse opening up under a competitor on the glacier who had gone slightly off-course. Fortunately, his partner was able to hold him with the rope. A mountain guide was immediately on the scene and the rescue helicopter was called. The injured athlete was taken to the nearest hospital in the Aosta valley and fortunately, is not serious.<\/p>\n

A great sign of solidarity came from another pair of competitors who arrived on the scene after them to help, sacrificing precious minutes – Andr\u00e9 Jonsson<\/strong> from Sweden and Rem\u00ed Fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> from Switzerland, who finally finished in ninth place.<\/p>\n

The women\u2019s race presented an interesting new twist with the participation of top skyrunners, Swedish twins<\/strong>, Lina <\/strong>and Sanna El Kott Helander<\/strong>, their first time racing at such high altitude \u2013 and a little worried. Facing strong competition from Italians Giuditta Turini <\/strong>and Laura Besseghini<\/strong> who led the 2019 until the final stages, the twins closed in 6h22’12”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cA wonderful race, a spectacular course! We\u2019re so happy we\u2019ve had the opportunity to run in this spectacular environment,\u201d <\/em>they chorused. \u201cWe\u2019re not used to the altitude but had no problems in the upper part. The snow was melting fast towards the finish, but we managed to arrive anyway! <\/em>First needless to say.<\/p>\n

The Italian team Turini, Besseghini, closed this time a triumphant second<\/strong> in 6h31’30”<\/strong> and a close third<\/strong>, were Italians Marina<\/strong> Cugnetto <\/strong>and Roberta Jacquin<\/strong> in 6h32’35”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It came as no surprise that the top men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams were Italian, racing on home ground, but runners from low elevation countries like Sweden, concerned about the altitude, performed well.<\/p>\n

The second edition of the AMA VK2 <\/strong>saw American Hillary Gerardi<\/strong> steal the show. In 2018 she won the Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong> with Briton Holly Page <\/strong>and this year, unable to take on the long race, wanted to come back to Alagna to drink in the mountain air. Nine kilometres<\/strong> of pure uphill with 2,086m vertical climb<\/strong>, this perfect double Vertical Kilometer\u00ae<\/strong> tops out at 3,200m altitude<\/strong>. She crossed the steep, snow-clad finish line in 1h58’57” <\/strong>\u2013 a new record.<\/p>\n

Italian Corinna Ghirardi<\/strong> closed an excellent second in 2h02’33”<\/strong>, while French woman Iris Pessey<\/strong>, the previous record holder, was third in 2h09\u201917<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

With the 2019 winner racing (and winning) the Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong>, the top spot went to Italian Damiano Lenzi <\/strong>in 1h32’13”<\/strong> beating Nadir\u2019s record by an incredible 9\u201948\u201d<\/strong>. Switzerland\u2019s Pascal Egli <\/strong>closed second in 1h38’15” <\/strong>and Italy\u2019s Giovanni Zamboni, <\/strong>closed the podium in 1h42’43”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What was one man\u2019s dream back in 1992 became history, the history of an innovative new sport. \u201cThe Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong>, the race that marked the birth of skyrunning, is here to stay!\u201d <\/em>stated Marino Giacometti<\/strong>, founder of the sport<\/strong> and President of the International Skyrunning Federation<\/strong>. \u201cThe stage is set to repeat history – a legend in the making.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
