Scarpa\u00ae are among the prizes awarded in the AMA VK2 CRONO lottery. \u00a9FSA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Armed with just a stopwatch and a huge desire to return to running in the mountains, the AMA VK2 CRONO <\/strong>initiative has kept the race, cancelled due to Covid-19, alive and kicking.<\/p>\n

The organisers of the AMA VK2<\/strong>, sister event to the Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong>, Europe\u2019s highest race and birthplace of skyrunning, wanted to keep the concept alive with an original project supported by a number of local hotels in Alagna Valsesia in the Italian Alps, together with footwear manufacturer Scarpa\u00ae<\/strong>, offering valuable prizes \u2013 not based on the fastest finishing times over the course but with a draw from all those who participated and supplied their data.<\/p>\n

Participants in the initiative were not only Italian, but came from Germany<\/strong>, Holland <\/strong>and France<\/strong> to test this spectacular double Vertical Kilometer<\/strong>\u00ae course which enjoyed international fame just one year after the launch.<\/p>\n

The AMA VK2 CRONO<\/strong> course ascends Monte Rosa, Europe\u2019s second highest mountain, and covers the original race course, 9 km long with 2,080m vertical climb<\/strong> \u2013 uphill only \u2013 to reach a challenging 3,260m altitude<\/strong>. Set in a stunning landscape, the terrain is very varied, winding through ancient Walser villages, steep pastures, scree and across snow fields.<\/p>\n

The timed test was launched on July 5 <\/strong>and valid until September 5<\/strong> inclusive. To participate, runners had to register on the website and send their finishing time, their GPS reading together with their data. Among many who completed the course over the two-month period, 23 athletes supplied their results to take part in the final prize draw.<\/p>\n

While the prizes at stake were not based on the fastest times, needless to say everyone gave it their best. The fastest time registered was 1h55\u201913\u201d<\/strong> by Italian Mattia Bertoncini<\/strong> who took a bronze medal at the 2019 Skyrunning Youth World Championships. He was just 13\u2019 off the record<\/strong> set by another Italian, Nadir Maguet<\/strong> in last year\u2019s inaugural race and represents the second-best performance ever<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Two skyrunning legends took part in the challenge. Local athlete Gisella Bendotti<\/strong>, a skyrunning champion and pioneer, after 26 years still holds the women\u2019s record of the Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong>. Twenty-six years on and accompanied by her twin nieces, the trio clocked 2h44\u201909\u201d<\/strong>, just 3\u2019 slower than her time in the 2019 AMA VK2<\/strong> race.<\/p>\n

The other legend taking part in the initiative was skyrunning founder Marino Giacometti<\/strong> who established the first record on Monte Rosa from Alagna. He took up the challenge to climb the 2,000m ascent to 3,250m to close in 3h0533\u201d <\/strong>\u2013 a great way to celebrate his birthday on the last day of the trial.<\/p>\n

Prizes in the final draw include a double room<\/strong> with breakfast in the following hotels in Alagna: Mirtillo Rosso Family Hotel<\/a>, Montagna di Luce<\/a>, MH Cristallo<\/a>, Tre Alberi Liberi<\/a> and Residence Mary<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Apart from the above prizes previously announced, a further six participants<\/strong> will receive prestigious running shoes offered by Scarpa\u00ae<\/strong>, leader in mountain, trail and skyrunning footwear. The high-performance Spin Ultra<\/a> model is designed for top runners and enthusiasts and is suitable for long distances and extended training sessions \u2013 just the job for climbing a double Vertical Kilometer<\/strong>\u00ae.<\/p>\n
