It was a case of \u201cless cloud, more sky\u201d for the Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong>, Europe\u2019s highest race<\/strong> held earlier today in the village of Alagna Valsesia<\/strong> on the Italian side of the mountain. Much anticipated after last year\u2019s relaunch 25 years from the first edition and the birth of skyrunning, yesterday\u2019s date was postponed due to severe weather conditions.<\/p>\n

Last night, the north wind turned around in favour of clear skies, and four hundred competitors <\/strong>from 25 countries <\/strong>took off at first light from the town square for a 1 km tour of the village before passing under the arch to attack the climb to the Margherita Hut<\/strong> at 4,554m altitude <\/strong>marking the turn-around point. The course is 35 km long <\/strong>with a total of 7,000m vertical climb<\/strong> over moraine, snow fields and glaciers. The runners race roped together in teams of two for safety.<\/p>\n

The winning men\u2019s team was led by last year\u2019s winner, Italian William Boffelli<\/strong>. Due to health issues with his previous partner, Franco Coll\u00e9<\/strong>, this year he raced with new team mate, Jakob Herrmann <\/strong>from Austria. Both accomplished ski-mountaineering champions, Herrmann climbed hard with his partner putting a 25-minute lead on the second team at the summit.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really wanted to perform well in this race because it\u2019s beautiful and unique<\/em>,\u201d said Boffelli. \u201cUnfortunately, Franco\u2019s health problems obliged me to change plans, and I want to thank Jakob who accepted to take on this adventure with just four days\u2019 notice. He\u2019s not used to the descent, but he gave it all to keep up with me! I dedicate this victory to Franco with the promise to return and race again with him!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em>The winning time was 4h51\u201958\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 27 minutes short of the standing record set back in 1994 by Italian Fabio Meraldi<\/strong> in 4h24<\/strong>\u2019.<\/p>\n

Crossing the finish line to cheering crowds in second was Italian team Beccari-Felicetti<\/strong> who closed in 5h10\u201941\u201d<\/strong>. In third, Italians Carrara-Montanari<\/strong>, in 5h30\u201902\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The women\u2019s race was comfortably led from the start by Italian team Giuditta Turini <\/strong>and Laura Besseghini<\/strong>, who fell on the last stretches of the downhill, unable to complete the race and forcing the team to retire.<\/p>\n

For Poland it was a day of victory with a sprint to the finish. Natalia Tomasiak<\/strong> and Katarzyna Solinska<\/strong> closing in 6h38\u201914\u201d<\/strong> followed, only 16 seconds later<\/strong>, by Miska Witowska- Iwona Januszyk<\/strong>. The women\u2019s record also remains intact, set in 1994 by local Gisella Bendotti<\/strong> in 5h34<\/strong>\u2019.<\/p>\n

Tomasiak, who participated in 2018, commented, \u201cLast year I came, but we struggled with the altitude, so I decided to come back. I immediately fell in love with this race and I wanted to do well. Today everything was perfect – the weather, the snow, the landscapes, my partner! I’m really sorry for the Italian girls, but I’m so happy! It’s like a fairy tale come true!<\/em>”<\/p>\n

A special mention goes to French woman Iris Pessey<\/strong> who place fourth<\/strong> today with No\u00e9mie Grandjean<\/strong>. Looking for double trouble, after winning yesterday\u2019s AMA VK2<\/strong>, the uphill-only version over the same course to an altitude of 3,260m<\/strong>, Pessey decided to take on both races \u2013 an exceptional performance.<\/p>\n

What was one man\u2019s dream back in 1992 became history, the history of an innovative new sport. \u201cThe Monte Rosa SkyMarathon<\/strong>, the race that marked the birth of skyrunning, is here to stay!\u201d <\/em>stated Marino Giacometti<\/strong>, founder of the sport<\/strong> and President of the International Skyrunning Federation<\/strong>. \u201cSince last year\u2019s relaunch we are climbing from success to success and, together with the new AMA VK2<\/strong>, the stage is set to repeat history, a legend in the making.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n
